Yarra Gardens was founded in Melbourne in 2020 with a simple belief: that a well-designed garden can change the way you live. Not just aesthetically, but practically — how you move through space, how you feel on a Sunday morning, how much time you spend outside.
We are a small studio, and we intend to stay that way. Being small means we can be hands-on with every project, from the first site visit to the final plant placement. It means our clients deal with the same people throughout, and nothing gets lost in a chain of communication.
We work across Melbourne and regional Victoria, taking on a carefully managed number of projects each year. We don't overextend, because overextension is where quality suffers.
Our founder grew up between Victoria and New South Wales, spending summers helping his grandmother tend a garden that seemed to grow without effort — but was, as he'd later understand, the product of decades of careful observation and quiet expertise.
After studying landscape architecture, he started this business with a clear vision: to build a practice that put design quality and client relationships ahead of growth and volume.
Yarra Gardens launched in 2020, initially taking on small residential projects in the inner suburbs. Word spread through the neighbourhoods we worked in, and the studio has grown steadily through referrals — which remain our primary source of new projects today.
Our team brings together expertise in landscape architecture, horticulture, and construction management. The garden we build for you will be designed, documented, built, and maintained by the same small group of people. That continuity is something we protect deliberately.
Every project begins with a long conversation. We want to understand how you live, what you love, what frustrates you about your current space, and what your garden could become. We don't present ideas until we've truly listened.
We don't copy templates or default to the fashionable. We design from first principles, responding to the specific light, soil, surrounding architecture, and climate of your site. Every garden we build is singular.
There's a difference between a garden that looks finished and one that is finished. We pay attention to the things that most people won't notice — because that's exactly what makes the difference between ordinary and lasting.
We have a deep commitment to working with plants suited to Melbourne's climate. This isn't just environmental — it's practical. Gardens planted with the right species for the right conditions are more resilient, lower maintenance, and more beautiful over time.
If something can't be built within your budget, we'll tell you. If an idea won't work in your soil, we'll explain why and offer an alternative. We'd rather have a difficult conversation early than a disappointment late.
Many of our clients have been with us since the beginning — returning for maintenance programs, additions, and new projects. We think of our work as a long-term relationship with a place, not a transaction with an end date.
